Mount Airy, North Carolina: Inside America’s Carport Manufacturing Cluster

If you have bought a steel carport in the United States in the last twenty years, there is a good chance it was engineered, rolled or sold by a company operating out of a town of about 10,700 people in the foothills of North Carolina.

Mount Airy, in Surry County, is a genuine industry cluster. We want to describe it accurately, which means saying clearly what is documented and what is folklore, because a lot of what gets written about this town is the latter.

The evidence the cluster is real

The most telling proof is mundane. The Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce maintains a business category called "Carport / Metal Buildings." Most chambers do not need one. That category currently lists eleven member companies, including Direct Metal Structures, Carport Central, Bulldog Steel Structures, Unified Steel Structures, American Metal Garages and Carolina Carports in nearby Dobson.

Eleven is a floor, not a total. It counts dues-paying chamber members and notably omits Eagle Carports, which is demonstrably headquartered in town at 210 Airport Road.

Who is actually there

The state has noticed the broader metal sector too. North Carolina's Department of Commerce announced Central States Manufacturing bringing a metal building components plant to Mount Airy in 2009, a investment of more than $4.5 million and 45 jobs, and a steel fabrication expansion by Ottenweller in 2013.

The dealer model this region runs on

The thing worth understanding about Mount Airy is not the town. It is the sales model that operates from it, because that model shapes how the entire industry sells.

Manufacturers here do not primarily sell direct. They build, and independent local dealers sell. In Eagle Carports' own description of its dealer program, a dealer receives an on-site display model, catalogs and paperwork, and earns a commission on every building sold. The manufacturer's crews handle delivery and installation.

That is why a customer in Ohio buys from a lot with a single display carport on it, and a truck from a regional plant shows up weeks later. It also explains a logistics quirk buyers find frustrating: rather than send a truck with one carport, manufacturers batch three to five structures headed to the same area onto one load. Cheaper, and slower.

Many companies advertising online are not manufacturers at all. They are dealers for manufacturers. Knowing which one you are talking to changes the entire conversation.

How fast, really

Published lead times vary so widely that you should treat any single number with suspicion. One independent dealer reports a typical installed timeline of three to eight weeks after site work is complete and the permit is in hand. A Mount Airy dealer advertises a five to ten business day estimated window. Those cannot both be typical, and the difference is usually site prep, permitting and route batching rather than factory speed.

Note also that national reach here is achieved by regional plants, not long-haul shipping from North Carolina. Eagle runs six facilities; Carolina Carports lists divisions in seven states. Nobody is trucking a carport from Mount Airy to Arizona.

And yes, it is Mayberry

Mount Airy is Andy Griffith's hometown and the acknowledged basis for Mayberry, per North Carolina's own tourism board. The town leans into it with the Andy Griffith Museum, Squad Car Tours, Floyd's Barber Shop and an annual Mayberry Days festival.

One honest note: we looked for evidence that steel building companies market on the Mayberry association and did not find it. Tourism and downtown retail do. The carport industry here seems content to be an industry.

What we could not verify, and will not claim

You will find articles asserting that Mount Airy is "the carport capital of the world," and that the industry grew directly out of the collapse of local textile and furniture manufacturing. Both are repeated constantly. We went looking for primary sourcing for each and found none. Not from the chamber, not from the city, not from the state, not from any news outlet.

The economic history is documented: granite quarrying, tobacco, textiles and furniture, then late-twentieth-century decline from global competition and automation. The carport industry's arrival is simply not part of any sourced account we could locate. It may well be true. It is not established.

There is also no published employment figure or economic-impact number for the carport sector in Surry County. If you see one, ask where it came from.
